Taxi association gives back to those in need

The Umjindi-Barberton Taxi Association (UBTA) turned the day of philanthropy inspired by the late Nelson Mandela's life into an opportunity to show compassion to three families in Emjindini, by donating food parcels to them on Saturday.

Chayma Mwale of UBTA said in the taxi industry they don’t only care about making a profit by transporting commuters on a daily basis, but they also believe in giving back to the community.

He further assured that the donation to destitute and grieving families will be an ongoing gesture.
Mwale said Sunday’s donation was part of Mandela Day, which was commemorated yesterday. The funds to buy the groceries was taken from the UBTA members’ monthly contributions.

Among the families which benefited from the food parcels was the family of the late taxi driver, Mlungisi Mandlazi.
Mandlazi was brutally murdered last month.

His mother, Mamcy Sibiya, who is a street vendor at Barberton Taxi Rank, was thankful to UBTA for the donation.
“I cannot find the words to explain my gratitude. He (Mandlazi) was a breadwinner for his two kids, aged five years and four months. They are both now under my care. This generous support will be very helpful for now,” said Sibiya.

She further thanked the community of Emjindini for support during their time of grieving.
Another elderly couple who were beneficiaries of the food parcels was Emilina and Chemistry Mavimbela.

“Thank you for your support and kindness. May God bless you and reward in a thousandfold, as you have fed the needy. May God bless you and replenish you,” said Emilina.

The last elderly couple to receive the generous donation from UBTA was Jabulile Mungane and France Msimango. The two live in a dilapidated shack in Extension 11 in Emjindini.

The UBTA delegates committed themselves to building them a better structure in future.
“Today (Sunday), I didn’t know what to cook. I was out to neighbours asking anything they could donate for us to cook and at least spend the day with full stomachs. Here God sent you for us. Thanks, UBTA very much. May God prosper your businesses,” said a teary Jabulile.
