KNP celebrates Rangers’ hard work and dedication

SKUKUZA – A rangers’ drill, guard of honour and wreath-laying ceremony were held in the Kruger National Park on Monday in commemoration of World Ranger Day.

The KNP’s choir, Voices of the Wild, also entertained and inspired guests. Senior members of SAPS, the SA National Defence Force and SANParks Honorary Rangers, along with KNP staff, were in attendance.

One of the oldest living retired KNP rangers, LCpl Willie Nkuna (94), was honoured and given a SANParks corporate jacket.

Guests were addressed by MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Mr Petrus Ngomane and KNP managing executive, Mr Glenn Phillips.

Ngomane urged communities and conservation institutions to work together in order to eradicate environmental crime for the enhancement of the province.

Phillips stated that rangers are a key force in protecting wildlife and maintaining the national park’s integrity. He said they need to be people who can keep focus in the bush and that very few people have the courage and necessary skills to perform this important task.

“As rangers, you are faced with a phenomenal task every time you put on that uniform and go out there to protect our country’s heritage. The four ranger regions depicted on this monument should serve as a constant reminder of posterity and I want to express our appreciation for your continuous service, dedication and commitment.

“Let me also take this opportunity to express our gratitude to all the spouses and families of all our rangers; we appreciate the sacrifices that you all make on a daily basis,” he said.

Rangers in South Africa’s 19 national parks perform duties such as daily patrols, snare location and removal, anti-poaching, reporting on erosion, alien plants and the integrity of the environment, law enforcement and community relations.
