A fire drill and spring market prove lots of fun
A visit from the local fire department, tree planting and a market made for an eventful week at Riverview Prep.
MALALANE – The last week of August was full of excitement as the local Fire Department visited Riverview Prep and the school celebrated spring.
The Fire Department took part in the school’s fire drill as part of the preschool’s theme, “People who help us in the community” on the Wednesday.

Children were taught how to keep safe in the event of a fire, and got to learn more about the fire engine. Some were lucky enough to actually sit in the driver’s seat.
All the pupils from grade one to four had an opportunity to help extinguish the fires at the end of the demonstration.
On Friday the school planted an indigenous river bushwillow in celebration of Arbor Week. Both the uncommon and common tree of the year were unsuitable for the school’s needs.
The buffalo thorn was unsuitable for the playground, and Ebony is a slow grower. The river bushwillow was chosen for both symbolic and practical reasons.
Besides learning about trees and dressing up for the spring theme, pupils also had their annual Market Day.
The special market gave the senior primary pupils the opportunity to sell their products and practice their entrepreneurial skills.

They had to advertise the products they had made or baked beforehand, and could keep the profits at the end of the day. It taught them about advertising, marketing, trading skills, multitasking and social skills.
