Association’s musos take the audience to España

Music lovers were treated to a superb performance by vocalist Aukse Trinkunas and star pianist Eugene Joubert during the Lowveld Chamber Music Association's (LCMA) España concert on Saturday.

MBOMBELA – The concert, held at organiser Walter Fourie’s house at 13 Miller Street, had a Spanish theme and highlighted vocal and piano works by Enrique Granados, Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albêniz, Maurice Ravel, Claude Debussy and Astor Piazzolla.

The duo undoubtedly captured the attention of the audience.
Trinkunas mesmirised the crowd with her beautiful voice and vocal technique. Although most of the guests did not understand Spanish, she explained the meaning of the songs through acting, and it was terrific.

Trinkunas, born in Lithuania, started singing when she was nine years old. “I started my music career at a very young age. I come from a family that loves music, I guess that made it easy for more to pursue music.”

Before she decided to sing professionally she was a choir conductor, however, the transmission was smooth.
She recently obtained a master’s degree in conducting from a university in Lithuania. “It has helped me a lot to understand music better. I don’t only perform Spanish music – I can also sing in Russian, French, German and many other languages,” said Trinkunas.

Joubert is a South African pianist who made his United States debut at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC in May 2007 during a conservatory project. He was a member of the Pro Arte Trio which won first place at the Stellenbosch National Chamber Festival in 2000. Following a performance of Olivier Messiaen’s “Quatuor pour la fin du temps” in 2007, Joubert became a founding member of the Oscine Trio which gave recitals in numerous cities throughout the USA.

A fan, Belinda Webb, congratulated the LCMA and Fourie for the world-class performance.
“The pianist was excellent, but not all the Spanish songs are well known. In my opinion, both performers are trained and professional. It is good to have some European culture on our doorstep,”
Webb said.
