It was a Commotion in the Ocean at Penryn

Despite their differences, pirates and mermaids can live together and most importantly, learn from each other was the lesson at Penryn College's Commotion in the Ocean concert

MBOMBELA – Who are better, pirates or mermaids? There was a commotion in the ocean at Penryn College’s chapel last week, as the two groups of learners in foundation phase tried to settle the argument once and for all.

The concert was presented by the grade one to three classes. It tells the story of Cap’n Scarypants, played by Thoriso Mdluli, from Me Hearty High School.

He is an overachieving pirate who needs to pass his swimming exam if he wants to graduate from his Aaargghh! Levels. There is just one problem for this fearless pirate – he cannot swim.

He has no choice but to ask the best swimmers in the ocean, the mermaids, to teach him how. But they hate the pirates, with their eyepatches and swords and “ooh, look at me I’m a pirate” stuff.
The audience was transported to a new world, witnessing the challenges pirates face in order to reach their goal.

It took six weeks to put the play together, and it was adapted from an Out of the Ark play. The play was tested last term to determine which of the grades would have the speaking roles.

The grade threes were given the speaking roles, while the grade two girls we given that of the Hawaiian dancers. The grade two boys surfed and the grade one boys and girls were jellyfish and seahorses respectively.

Neither the pirates nor the mermaids won or lost, as both sides learned that despite their differences, they learned something from each other.
