According to Thuli Makofane, ECD programme director at Penreach, children learned skills that were important to the development of reading and writing during early speech and language development, starting from birth and continuing through the preschool years.
She explained that the importance of language development was recognised as part of the Penreach ECD programme in the province.

“We reached 256 children with a variety of activities related to early language development. The literacy week initiative is complemented through the ongoing support that Penreach change agents provide to eight centres in the Emjindini area,” said Makofane.

“Two community-based toy libraries have been established in the community, and language development forms part of the activities at the these libraries. In a country where less than five per cent of parents read to their children on a regular basis, it is important to make reading material and storybooks accessible to children as well as caregivers.
The donation of toys and books for the centres was much appreciated,” said project manager, Adel Terblanche.
