Roots butchery workers down tools

Members of the South African Equity Workers Association (SAEWA) at the Roots Butchery have embarked on a strike.

The strike follows a deadlock between the union and management at the butchery over wages and other employment conditions.

“The members resolved to strike as a last resort,” said SAEWA general secretary, Robert McAlpine.

“This is in hope that the employer will agree to paying them a living wage and stop victimising them by reducing their  working hours,” he added.

According to McAlpine some workers earn as little as R1 3000 per month. “This adds up to R480 per month which is spent on transport to and from work.”

Other issues include labor brokers who claim to be the employer of the workers.
