Man denies knowledge of cocaine in package he was transporting

Cocaine valued at over R700 000 was smuggled across the border by a suspect who insisted that he did not know what the package contained.

KOMATIPOORT – Police arrested a Mozambican national on Saturday night after they found a parcel containing cocaine in his possession. The cocaine had an estimated value of R725 700.

The man was driving a minibus taxi, and passing through Komatipoort on his way to Johannesburg when he was stopped by alert police officers.

He failed to produce a passport and, when police discovered the cocaine, claimed that he had no idea what was in the package. He stated that someone else in Mozambique had requested he give the parcel to someone in Johannesburg.

The suspect was detained at Komatipoort Police Station and appeared in the local Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He was denied bail and remanded in custody until his next court appearance this coming Monday.
