Six things to remember when encountering a snake

With the arrival of the warmer weather the number of snake sightings will increase. We at Lowvelder have compiled a list of things which you should do if you spot one of these creatures.

1.Inform a handler and take note the snake’s exact location

If you wish to have the snake removed by a  trained professional it is important that you take note of this information. Handlers will only respond to immediate sightings and instances wherein the snake’s location is confirmed.

2. Remember as much detail as possible about the snake

Different snakes require different methods of capture. Details about the snakes appearance can assist the handler in this regard.

3. Do not kill the snake

All living creatures deserve a chance at life, snakes are no different.

4. Do not disturb the snake

Snakes that feel threatened may try to escape or strike to protect themselves.

5. Keep a safe distance and if possible have someone monitor the snake’s movement.

6.Keep all pets a safe distance away from the area.

If the snake feels that your dog or cat is getting too close it may strike in self-defence. If the snake is a spitting cobra, then your pets will be at risk of being blinded by its venom.
