Police raise awareness about firearms

The officers also helped members of the public with applying for and renewing their gun licenses

On Friday September 29, the Nelspruit Police Station held a firearm awareness campaign at The Plaza shopping centre. The campaign was held to educate the community on how to report cases of illegal firearm possession to the police.

During the campaign members of the station handed out pamphlets with information on the Dangerous Weapons Act of 2013.

In this pamphlet, members of the public could get information on what constitutes a dangerous weapon, the position of the Act on the carrying of dangerous weapons and firearms at public gatherings, the prohibitions for the possession of dangerous weapons in terms of the Act, the factors which one should look out for when determining whether another person plans to use the a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and the activities which are not in contravention of the Dangerous Weapons Act.

The officers also helped members of the public with applying for and renewing their gun licenses by helping them to understand the form and by giving them information on what they need to bring to the police station when completing the process.
