TOPS at SPAR Lowveld Oktoberfest, for the love of beer and German culture

There is something special about a traditional Oktoberfest celebration that you just cannot deny.

MBOMBELA- The Tops at SPAR Lowveld Oktoberfest tomorrow will recreate that exact feeling of walking into the beer halls in Munich, by making sure all the details are there.

When people think of ‘beer festivals’ and ‘Germany’, their minds generally go straight to Oktoberfest, the largest beer festival in the world. But in a country where beer is king – about five billion litres of the stuff is produced annually -and this year, the Lowveld Airshow committee brings one of the greatest festivals in the world to your doorstep.

The philosophy of the Lowveld Air Show committee is to first and foremost support local entrepreneurs and give them a platform to showcase themselves.

The local brewers that will feature are Sabie Brewing Co, Big Buddie BBQ Brewing Co, Owl & Hare Craft Brewery and Hops Hollow Brewing. They will be showcasing the best beer they have on offer.

An Oktoberfest might be all about beer, but it is not a proper festival without German cuisine. German food is rich, hearty and delicious and many popular German dishes make great comfort food.

Each region has its own speciality dishes and traditional cuisine, and your list of top-10 German foods can easily change from one city to the next.

You can be sure to expect some of these from Zest, Bundu Lodge, Magnolia and Meat Delights who will be serving you the best German food in the Lowveld.

When the Lowveld Oktoberfest is in full swing many of you will be seeing (or wearing) the traditional garments. All participants are encouraged to come dressed in proper German attire.Fantasy Flair at Nelacres has lots of Dirndl and Lederhosen costumes to choose from. Lederhosen and Dirndl are traditional Bavarian attire that was worn by farmers, shepherds, carpenters and peasants.

The Dirndl dress includes a white blouse with a bodice which is generally very short, with long, short or puffed sleeves. It can have many different necklines and is usually made of white cotton or linen. The most traditional form of the Dirndl is a long skirt which goes to the ankles. The modern version is often shorter.

Knowing on which side of your waist to tie the knot of the ribbon of your apron can reveal a whole lot about your marital status. To the left means you are single. To the right means you are married or promised to someone. In the middle is for young girls and at the back means you are widowed.

Lederhose are traditionally worn with high socks which can go up to the knees. Typically it is worn with a plain or plaid shirt. In full costumes, the Lederhosen also have suspenders.

There is also a large number of traditional Oktoberfest songs which people from across the world sings at Oktoberfests. It is also required to sing the most popular songs from the country in which the beerfest is held to combine the two traditions. The best known beerfest song is “Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit”. Other popular beerfest songs include “Hey Baby!”, “99 Luftballons”, “Country Roads” and “Anton aus Triol”.
