SWALALA – Actor Kagiso Modupe brought a message of hope to Khanyisani Secondary School on Friday. He visited the school as part of the Penreach programme.
“What type of song are you? You have to be the kind of song people will be talking about for the next 50 years,” Modupe said while speaking to around 60 learners who hung onto his every word.

Modupe is an author, a social activist and an actor, most famous for his role in the television soapie Scandal! Ahead of Youth Day on Saturday he presented a motivational talk to young pupils about their future. Modupe also shared the story of how he became the successful celebrity he is today. After he matriculated his parents got him a job packing boxes at Kellogg’s. He decided that this was not the person he wanted to be and then started selling sweets to pay for his tertiary education. This led to him becoming a qualified physical therapist before becoming an actor.

He gave the children a message of hope, telling them that nobody should ever write them off. Even when they feel hopeless, they have to remember “the dog is not dead yet”.
“He really inspired these kids today and showed them that they can rise above their circumstances and make something of their lives,” said Penreach change agent Ronald Chanetsa.
Khanyisani deputy principal, Nhlanhla Maduna, echoed this statement, adding that it is good for the learners to have a positive role model like Modupe. Modupe said it was a wonderful experience for him as well and vowed to do this for the Penreach programme again in future.
