BARBERTON – Barberton Mines, whose consortium includes Fairview, Sheba and New Consort, launched a safety day last Thursday.
It served to commemorate over 12 months without any fatalities reported in their shafts.
The launch was held at Jathira Guesthouse under the theme “Score a Goal for Safety”.
Mandla Ndlozi, Barberton Mines safety, health, environment and quality group manager, said the launch of the safety day was to reaffirm Barberton Mines’ commitment towards a zero-harm goal and ensuring that all employees can go to work with the knowledge that they will safely return home daily.
He said the recommitment and reaffirmation was much more than the dedication of a single day to safety and healthy.

“On this day, as we launch the safety and healthy day campaign, we publicly commit ourselves to our goal of scoring a goal for safety. This means that all our employees must go to work with the knowledge and expectation that they will return home, every day, safely and unharmed,” added Ndlozi.
“Today, we are also commemorating our 100-million fatality-free shafts. We have worked 12 months and 135 days without sustaining any fatalities or serious injuries. This is an indication that we care for our employees in terms of health and safety,” said Ndlozi.
Among those who attended, were Barberton Mines senior managerial personnel.
These included Jan Thirion, general manager, Pierre Human, manager mining and Martin Pieters, finance manager.
Mine overseers, along with supervisors in all sections, were also present.
At the end of the event, a Barberton Mines safety pledge was signed by everyone there.
