BARBERTON – Department of Correctional Services officials from Barberton Maximum Correctional Centre embarked on their annual community outreach programme, where they identified a destitute school and lent a helping hand by donating basic needs.
The school identified this year was Ekhiyeni Primary School.
According to the head of the centre, Noah Nkosi, they assisted by donating sanitary towels, toiletries, school uniforms, food parcels and other basics to the neediest pupils.

“The school identified 25 learners from destitute families, child-headed families and learners from impoverished families. The identified learners received full school uniforms, which included shoes, shirts, blazers, socks and belts. The beneficiaries reside in the surrounding informal settlement and local farms. All items donated were bought by officials out of their own pockets,” said Nkosi.
He was humbled by the generosity showed by the officials.
“The love that our officials displayed today, it reassures the community that we are capable of making an impact on someone’s life. As the department, we are expected to rehabilitate offenders and you can only achieve this if you have a passion to work with people. So, our officials proved that they are capable and passionate about changing people’s lives,” Nkosi said.
The centre adopted the school and made a pledge that they will continue to assist the needy learners throughout the year. Some of the officials in attendance also adopted needy pupils, committing themselves to mentoring and assisting them with their needs.
