Working together for a better White River

The White River Local Tourism Organisation (LTO) and the town’s ratepayers association (RPO) joined forces at the LTO’s recent meeting at the Premier Hotel The Winkler to promote White River as a tourism destination.

Chairman George Muller welcomed Piet Skead and Rowan Tor, as representatives of the RPO, to the third meeting of the recently established organisation. Several community incentives were discussed.

An improved appearance of the town, a suggestion to promote White River as a golfing destination and two arts and crafts initiatives were suggested. An Artists in the Park event in Ronnie Bester Park, as well as a smaller arts and craft showcase, were mentioned.

It was reported that the concept had been pursued since 2012. Locals had initially been sceptical, but now supported it. The RPO would further discuss it with the developers of the new shopping centre to pursue the matter.

Concern was expressed about the potential of losing major cycling events due to the state of some local roads, which would seriously impact on the tourism businesses in the area.

The need to reinforce White River’s proximity to the Kruger National Park in the marketing of the town was raised again. However, it was reported that tourism operators were already focusing on this aspect in their respective marketing activities.

The potential to showcase the town’s history also needs attention, and the concept of open gardens was suggested as an initial manageable project, whereby local residents would open up their gardens to the general public for viewing. It was suggested that local garden retailers could be involved, and even drive the initiative.

A suggestion was made to have LTO representation on the White River RPO in order to promote solidarity of the different stakeholders working towards the betterment of the town.
