Young scientists in out midst

A grade six pupil of Nelspruit Primary, Mihran Kabir's keen interest in science and years of hard work recently paid off when she brought home two major awards from the International Science Fair of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists.

MBOMBELA – The competition was held at Birchwood Hotel and Conference Centre in Boksburg.

Mihran won the gold medal for her project for renewable energy generated from a biodigester and she was named category trophy winner.

She produced biogas as a cooking fuel from kitchen waste.

Thirteen-year-old Zahra Jogi, also of Nelspruit Primary took home the silver medal and she was the category trophy winner for non-renewable energy: fossil fuels and use of energy.

Her project was based on the use of indoor motion censored lighting as a way to save electricity and reducing energy consumption.

Schoolmates, Muhammad Taha Hira (grade seven) achieved a second place and Fatima Zahra Bellim, also grade seven, received a highly commended certificate for their displays.
