Four hands, two pianos, priceless music

The two talented women met about 15 years ago and started to practice together for fun.

On Sunday afternoon Vakansiedorp was filled with the sounds of classical piano when Merle Siviter and Susan van Welie entertained music lovers with their rendition of some of the old masters’ music.

The two talented women met about 15 years ago and started to practice together for fun. “We then decided to do a few concerts for charities and invited people to listen,” Susan said. Soon it became an annual occasion, and their party grew to about 40 people.

Susan said she started music lessons at the age of five and went on to graduate with a master’s degree.

Merle became a school teacher and taught music to grade eight. She is currently a teacher at Summerhill Prep School.

“We just love to play and share this wonderful talent we received with our friends,” Susan said about the concert, performed on two pianos simultaneously.

Their repertoire for the Sunday afternoon included Joseph Haydn’s Concerto in D, WA Mozart’s Sonate for Four Hands, Johannes Brahms’ Rhapsody Op.119 No 4, Ludwig van Beethoven’s Overture from Egmont and Edward Grieg’s Concerto in A Minor.

As an encore they played a selection from My Fair Lady. Before the concert refreshments were served.
