PREVIEW: Citizen scientists vital part of completed bird census
Mpumalanga recently attained 100 per cent coverage in the second Southern African Atlas Bird Project (SABAP2), much to the delight of local birders.

Nationwide, more than 2 500 people have participated in the project, submitting more than 11,5 million records, which will open the door for taking conservation measures and conducting further research.
SABAP2 is the largest project of its kind in Africa. The key to its success is the extensive use of citizen scientists, or ordinary people interested in contributing to science. The main objective is conservation and noting changes in bird distribution, through recording and then submitting of species lists throughout southern Africa.
