Matthew Prior remembered with cricket festival
This cricket festival is an annual event hosted by Uplands Preparatory in memory of Matthew John Prior who died in September 2010.
Eight teams participated in the recent Matthew Prior Cricket Festival at Uplands, including first teams from Tygervalley College, St Dunstan’s, Trinity House Little Falls, Hatfield Christian School, St Peter’s, Penryn Prep School, Uplands and the Uplands u/12 A team.
The format saw teams playing either 40 or 50 over games on Friday, and a super 6s tournament on Saturday. All the teams played two T20 matches on Sunday.
Unfortunately, Saturday’s matches were interrupted by rain and called off. This did not stop the afternoon programme with all the visiting schools going on a tour to the Kruger National Park.
This cricket festival is an annual event hosted by Uplands Preparatory in memory of Matthew John Prior who died in September 2010 after being struck in the chest by a short ball. He collapsed while opening the batting for Uplands Prep against Lydenburg.
He achieved the highest score (65) and he was posthumously awarded the best fielder for the 2010 cricket season.
Matthew was involved in many different sports at Uplands and was loved by friends and teachers.
In celebration of his life and the spirit in which Matthew played the game, this festival is hosted to further ignite a passion for the game of cricket, the spirit of the great game and sportsmanship in which it should be played.
