Robber to spend 7 years in jail over Marloth break-in

Nearly four years after breaking into a house in Marloth Park and robbing the occupant, a robber was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment.

KOMATIPOORT – A robber was sentenced to seven years behind bars for a robbery he committed in Marloth Park on December 24, 2014.

According to Const Natacia Mbuyane of the Komatipoort SAPS, suspects broke into a house around 22:00. They woke the resident and threatened him with a knife. They failed to find cash, but stole valuables worth around R10 000.

Two suspects, Thulani Mkhabela (28) and Elvis Mkhabela (28) were arrested. Thulani was found not guilty, while Elvis was declared unfit to possess a firearm and guilty for house robbery. He was sentenced to seven years in prison during his court appearance last Tuesday.

Four rhino poaching suspects will appear in the same court on November 19 for their bail application. They were arrested during the late hours of October 28 due to cooperation between the SANDF and police.

Officers received a tip-off that a possible stolen vehicle was heading to Naas from Komatipoort and soldiers from the Macadamia Military Base were notified. They intercepted the vehicle, searched it and found five rhino horns.

Three suspects were arrested and, after more investigation, a fourth was found on a farm near Marloth Park. He had two hunting rifles in his possession.

They appeared in the Nkomazi Magistrate’s Court the following day on charges that included possession of rhino horn without a permit and possession of unlicensed firearms.

The trio appeared on court on November 6, but the bail hearing was postponed to Monday, November 19.
