Blankets and more knitted with love
Many of these blankets have now found their way to cyclone-stricken Mozambique.
Although it started with a request for 67 blankets for Mandela Day a few years ago, women in the Lowveld are knitting and crocheting hundreds of blankets every month.
Many of these have now found their way to cyclone-stricken Mozambique, while others have been distributed to local homes and charities. Between emergencies they stockpile, according to organiser Penny Boden.
These stocks were displayed at the Barnyard at Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre this past weekend. Many of the “knitwits” were there to share patterns, while others just enjoyed the fellowship – as they do every month when they gather at a coffee shop.
A group of women from Masoyi who gather at St George’s Church every week for a service and use the opportunity to produce blankets, were also present at the exhibition.
Women who would like to join in the project but cannot meet every month, can either donate wool or knit blankets, or even squares, on their own and send it to Boden.
