Talent In Motion

A month-long poetry competition was hosted by Mash FM's radio show Talent In Motion.

“The aim of the competition was to involve primary level pupils in problem solving, build their leadership skills and improve their confidence, as well as create awareness about issues affecting the community,” said Emmanuel Monareng, the organiser of the competition.

The participating schools were Laerskool Lydenburg, Lydenburg Primary, Marifaan Primary and Lydenburg Adventist Academy.

Each of the participating schools selected one pupil to represent their school, who was given a theme such as “substance abuse”, “women and child abuse”, “crime”, “my school my future” and “my heritage” to create their own poems.

Hawa Morigitlane from Lydenburg Primary School was the winner.

Mbalentle Njoli from Marifaan Primary took the second prize, Omphile Lekeba from Laerskool Lydenburg took position three and Nqobile Ngwenya from Lydenburg Adventist Academy came fourth.

Lydenburg Primary School’s deputy principal, Johnny Ramodike, said this was a great initiative by the radio station.

“These competitions will help improve and promote language activities. As much as the prizes they got, it shows a deeper understanding of the content that is in question, as the pupils were made aware of the social ills and dangers faced in their lives.”

The poetry competition is set to take place annually.
