Springboks, our world champions

Like the rest of the country, the city was a sea of green and gold on Saturday as the Springbok rugby team took on England in the much-anticipated Rugby World Cup 2019 final in Yokohama, Japan.

Venues all over town went the extra mile to accommodate excited fans in Springbok shirts, who did not want to miss one minute of the big event. And they were not disappointed.

After beating England 32-12, captain Siya Kolisi lifted the Webb Ellis Cup to the cheers of jubilant crowds all over South Africa. People celebrated in the streets until late Saturday evening – a nation united by a single sporting event.

According to the latest World Rugby rankings, the Springboks are now the world’s number one team.

It was also the Springboks’ third Webb Ellis Cup triumph, after successes in 1995 (at home) and 2007 (in France) to match the All Blacks for titles won.
