Lydenburg wine guild celebrated it’s 32nd year in style
Hartenberg Wines near Stellenbosch chooses quality before mass production, said managing director, Kobus Potgieter, who came all the way from the Cape to do a tasting for Lydenburg's Wine Guild on Thursday, October 24.
British wine fundi, Tim Atkin has once again rated Hartenberg as a “Cape First Growth Estate” on his 2019 Cape Classification list – a well-deserved accolade for winemaker Carl Schultz, who is also a long-standing member of the Cape Winemakers Guild.
Known for his quality Shiraz wines, Schultz, who has been the winemaker at Hartenberg for 26 years, also won two of the 15 gold awards at the annual international Syrah du Monde competition in France, competing with 23 countries and well over 3 000 entrants.

It was no surprise that one of these awarded wines, the Hartenberg Estate Shiraz 2016, was chosen as wine of the evening at the guild’s tasting held at Café Crust. The Doorkeeper Shiraz 2017 was selected as value for money wine of the evening – at an affordable R90 per bottle. The Riesling 2017 was selected as the white wine of the evening.
Hartenberg markets its wines in three ranges – Doorkeeper as entry level, estate wines and its Super Premium range which includes among others The Stork, Gravel Hill shiraz and The Mackenzie – a Bordeaux blend. Scores of 15 to 18 out of 20 were common for the six wines tasted, including the Chardonnay 2017, Merlot 2016 and Alchemy Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc 2017 blend.
