“This is the first time we’ve done this, and we will host a bigger event in 2020. We don’t have any intention of discontinuing at any time. I hope it keeps growing into a larger event,” said James Fraser of Watergat.

“We had cancer survivors and those who lost their loved ones due to related diseases. The members from the Department of Health also graced our event. We hope locals will get tested and create awareness for cancer-related diseases.”

Mmatshepo Mphogo from CM Creations said the event was designed to raise awareness and to remind locals to get their annual check-ups. “Guests bought pink balloons for R50 that will be given to the CANSA foundation; all the funds raised on the day, will go to the foundation.” Cancer survivors narrated their stories and how they overcame the illness.

Jan Renken from Watergat also shared how some of his family and friends succumbed to cancer-related diseases. He advised attendees to get tested for prostate, breast and skin cancer and more.

“Cancer hits almost every family, and you don’t really realise that until it happens to your close friends or family. The statistics show that one person out of three is diagnosed with cancer. It touches everybody, and this is something we feel strongly about combatting.”

Guests were also able to write messages of hope those who have succumbed to the disease.

The cancer workshop was not the only event that attracted guests at Watergat. An art gallery was also hosted at the venue.

Well-known artist, Llewellyn Kruger of International Art Brokers, who hails from Port Elizabeth, was among those who displayed his paintings at the restaurant.

“We had the art gallery on the deck, the tickets were only R100. It included wine and cheese. Guests also had the chance to participate in the lucky draw to win a painting to the value of R5 000. The winner will be announced at end of December 2019, so don’t forget to buy your ticket in order to stand a chance of winning the painting,” added Fraser.

you all for helping us on this special day to bring cancer awareness to our town,” concluded Fraser.
