Through Henk’s lens

Most important, take the camera, find your subject and capture. Have fun.

Local photographer, Henk Ten Cate, is the first reader to share his passion and some photos with us.

“Taking pictures has become such an integral part of our daily lives that it is almost impossible to imagine a world without it. Almost every person has a camera nearby, be it a mobile phone, small point-and-shoot camera or the more advanced DSLR cameras.” said Ten Cate.

Photography is best described as the capture of a moment in time, as seen through the eyes of the photographer.
This is where the magic happens, as every person applies his or her own creativity, through the eye only they can see and influenced by the individual’s specific interests resulting in a unique end result.

The three basic elements of a good photo are exposure, composition and focus. The key subject should be properly exposed, in focus and positioned in such a way that the subject stands out from the rest of the photograph.

This can be achieved through an understanding of the Rule of Thirds, using leading lines, shapes, colours, contrasts and framing.
Most important, take the camera, find your subject and capture. Have fun. And challenge the above rules while doing it. You might just create the next winning photo.
