Biography tells of awe-inspiring woman
Humble Beginnings, The Story of Nora Fakude-Nkuna, by Mbekezeli Mbuli, is an inspirational read indeed.

On its cover, this recent biography is described as a portrait of Mpumalanga’s most successful local businesswoman.
The content takes the reader on a journey from rags to riches as Fakude-Nkuna’s life is followed through an interesting tale of trials and tribulations.
Born as one of the twins and raised under difficult circumstances, the book has a very philosophical approach. It often refers to her Christianity which she regards as her leading light and anchor throughout her life.
Born with a sense for business, even during her years as a rural high school pupil, she kept some stock of the basic cosmetics a hostel girl would need, selling to her fellow learners.

Though trained as a teacher, she didn’t remain in the profession too long before starting with the manufacturing, distribution and retailing of hand-made curios.
A broken marriage left her with six children to raise and not much of an option to eke out a decent living during the struggle years in the area around Numbi. Here a modern shopping centre today stands as a monument to her perseverance.
Throughout many of the setbacks she had to overcome, such as the death of both her sons, the hard life of living on the road as a vendor, harassment by the security forces of the previous dispensation, Fakude-Nkuna has remained positive.
Once established, she now fulfils her public duties as a community leader with great patience and dignity.
For those finding inspiration in a spiritual and humble outlook on life, this book will be a great pleasure to read.
For me, who is interested in the history of my region, it fills an important gap on how life used to be for a certain segment of our population.
Humble Beginnings, The Story of Nora Fakude-Nkuna will find a proud place in my extensive library of local and regional history, and will soon be of great reference to scholars and researchers.
Contributing to this is the great collection of media clippings and photos included in the book. It is available at Exclusive Books for R200.
