Modikwa runner preparing for the Comrades Marathon

"Athletics and marathons are fun, I always try to encourage my friends and neighbours to participate in at least in one sport. It can be soccer, cricket or rugby. This will keep them fit and healthy."

Local marathon runner, Elvis Madiba (26), is already preparing for the annual Comrades Marathon taking place on June 14.

Elvis Madiba brought home a bronze medal from the Soweto race.

Madiba trains with Modikwa Marathon Club in Montrose. In 2019, the man from Driekop competed in the 42-kilometre Soweto Marathon in 04:21;03, achieving a bronze medal for his effort.

“I have already qualified for the Comrades and I am just keeping myself ready by competing in marathon races all over the country. This was the eighth time I competed in the Soweto race.”

Madiba urged other locals to join him in this sport.

“Athletics and marathons are fun, I always try to encourage my friends and neighbours to participate in at least in one sport. It can be soccer, cricket or rugby. This will keep them fit and healthy.”

Madiba was not the only athlete from Modikwa to participate in the race. Karel Morebhe competed in the 21-kilometre race while Philipe Madiba took part in the 10-kilometre race.
