Concerned residents took on a campaign to clean up Lydenburg Hospital.
Some local residents had expressed their dissatisfaction about the appalling conditions of the public hospital last Friday.

According to one of the community members, Aubrey Makomane, when they looked at the hospital they found it unclean, and when they questioned the hospital management about these conditions, they were told it had no money to care for
the facility.
“As locals concerned about our hospital, we gathered collectively with other concerned members who voluntarily assisted with the clean-up. We will continue to help cleaning it until the hospital reaches the point of being able to maintain the facility. We felt that the condition and state of the unit put residents and patients at risk,” Makomane said.
Even though they had no money, the residents managed to help mow the lawns, fix leaks in the plumbing, pack and sort files, paint the helipad and assist with other maintenance problems that the hospital could not due to its lack of funds.

The volunteers are appealing to local businesses and other community members to assist by donating other materials that can help to maintain the hospital.
The Department of Public Works and the municipality’s Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) also took part in this cleaning campaign.
Another volunteer, Christopher Mohlala, told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that they do not want to see the Department of Labour shutting down the hospital because of these conditions. “We cannot afford to sit back and watch our hospital sink away in dirt,” Mohlala said.
