PCA food parcels go a long way

Pediatric Care Africa (PCA) started the year with a massive outreach, delivering about four tons of food to 150 families in Brondal, Katoen and Msholozi last Tuesday.

The PCA secretary, Surika van der Merwe, said the organisation had an early start last Tuesday and was faced with “extreme heat” during its first delivery of 2021.

Van der Merwe said the food parcels went to those who are battling to feed themselves and their families.

“December was tough on so many people and many children didn’t get food at school during this time, especially since many parents were unable to find a job or any source of income. Feeding our children is so important,” said Van der Merwe.

“Thanks to a generous grant from the Industrial Development Corporation we were able to feed hundreds of families in our communities. None of these donations would have been possible without its help.

“A total of 150 families received food parcels of 28 kilograms each, consisting of a dry food parcel containing rice, tins of food, sugar, a bag of maize meal as well as a bag of vegetables and a dozen eggs.”

Van der Merwe added that requests for food and medical assistance were growing fast “as more and more people simply cannot make ends meet anymore”.

“We foresee this trend to continue for the first part of this year. We at PCA are grateful that we are able to assist our communities in distressing times.”

She said that between March and December, PCA distributed 12 tons of food, the equivalent of 320 000 adult meals. “Stay safe, wear your mask and take care of one another,” she said.
