Intensive care nurse honoured

Mediclinic Nelspruit honoured one of its own in celebration of International Nurses Day, held on May 12.

Muzi Sibeko was elected by his fellow medical staff at the hospital as the recipient of the nursing excellence award. The award is given to a nurse in honour of their hard work and care for their patients.

“We have a big nursing contingent in the hospital, close to 400 nurses,” said Mediclinic Nelspruit’s spokesperson, Robyn Baard.

“His being chosen from all these people shows the respect that all of them have for him.”

Sibeko has been in the nursing profession for 11 years and has been with Mediclinic for five. He works in the ICU, which means he has been at the forefront of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Whenever the bravery of frontline workers like him is praised, he says it is just a part of their job.

“I told my supervisor the other day that we nurses are like the band that kept playing while the Titanic was sinking. We had no choice but to continue playing.”

He originally wanted to pursue a career in social work but was driven to nursing by his parents. “I feel my profession chose me. I have no regrets. I have enjoyed it all these years,” explained Sibeko.

He said he finds it difficult to describe how Covid-19 impacted not only him, but all frontline workers.

“Maybe in 10 or 20 years I’ll be able to tell my kids about it.”

The community’s support during the initial stages of Covid-19 is something that remains with Sibeko. “Their help and support is what kept us going in those dark times.”
