Co-accused of fraud in court

He was arrested by members of the Hawks' Serious Commercial Investigation team on August 30.

Warren Brett Smith (48) appeared in the Nelspruit Special Commercial Crime Court on Monday August 30 after he had been arrested by members of the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Investigation team earlier the same day for fraud, theft and money laundering.

Smith was granted bail of R10 000 and the matter was postponed to October 1 for appointment of a legal representative.

The provincial Hawks spokesperson, Capt Dineo Lucy Sekgotodi, said it was alleged that in February 2019, Smith, who was in a relationship with the main suspect in this matter, Carol Ann Avent, who was employed as a bookkeeper for Trans Collection CC, fraudulently transferred more than R644 811 from the business account into his personal bank account for renting/leasing and purchasing of property.
