Needy families benefit from Legislature

The Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature, Makhosazane Masilela, wrapped up Women's Month by visiting the Nkomazi Local Municipality to donate furniture and groceries to eight needy women-headed households last Monday.

These activities formed part of Masilela’s Legacy Project. She partnered with the Department of Social Development and the Nkomazi Local Municipality.

One of the beneficiaries, Gogo Nokuthela Ngomane, could not contain her tears as she received some food parcels to last her for six months, and furniture that included beds, a stove and a refrigerator.

Gogo Ngomane lives with her 12 grandchildren. “I am very happy to receive the gifts and above all, I thank God and the caring government for showing me love,” she said.

Also noteworthy was the Mazibuko family of 20 members, whose house had burned down in December.

Nkomazi Local Municipality had pledged to assist them with rebuilding their house.

“We are here because of the Speaker’s Legacy Project, which aims to change lives in the community. We are here as the Legislature to conduct oversight, which enables us to assess service delivery in the province. I believe that if we empower women, there would be a huge difference in the community. That is why I have selected a few women who are trying very hard to raise their children,” said Masilela.

She further encouraged the beneficiaries to look after the furniture and requested them to refrain from selling the goods. She further thanked the sponsors who contributed to the success of her projects.

The Speaker’s Legacy Project has so far assisted 20 needy households in all three districts of the province.
