ANCYL rejects councillors’ lists

The youth wing of the ruling party threatened to make Mpumalanga "ungovernable" if the ANC did not meet its demands.

The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in Mpumalanga threatened to render the province “ungovernable” if the ruling party did not amend its proportional representation (PR) councillors’ lists as soon as possible.

According to a strongly worded media statement released on September 30, the list that was submitted to the IEC does not meet the national guidelines of the ANC.

“The ANC has been consistently making an unwavering commitment that in all its lists to councils young people must at least have 25% representation. However, the ANC in the province found comfort in annoying us, the youth, by disregarding this guideline. The thorough assessment of the ANCYL is that no municipality in all 20 municipalities in the province has met this 25% mandatory guideline as required,” read the statement.

The ANCYL said it viewed this act as an insult to the young people who constituted a majority in the membership of the ANC and the broader population in Mpumalanga.

The youth wing called upon young people in the province to immediately withdraw from ANC campaigns until the party met its demands. It also called upon all structures of the ANCYL to halt all activities planned over the weekend until its demands were met.

“We are giving the ANC Provincial Executive Committee and the National Executive Commitee 48 hours to resolve this concocted plot to isolate young people or we will render the province ungovernable.”

According to the statement, the ANCYL was still committed to a victory for the ruling party in the upcoming elections, but that it would not “agree to be abused by the eldership of the ANC.”
