WATCH: Swift action contains fire at Marloth Park home
Residents were alerted to the blaze at around 02:00.
“When your neighbour calls you at 02:00 saying a house, not far from you, is on fire and a strong wind is blowing in your direction, the feeling is not good at all.”
These were Esther Caripis’ words after a fire that had started in Marloth Park early this morning had been put out.
Caripis’ home (she has been a resident of Marloth Park for the last 18 years) is in Hartebees Street while the home where the blaze was raging is in Papegaai Street. She said there was only a parkland standing between her home and the fire, with winds blowing in her direction. It is also extremely dry in the park.
“Fortunately, the wind shifted in a different direction and I could relax a bit.”

According to her, Juan de Beer and Wynand Calitz were first on the scene at 02:08. She said the flames were massive and it was not a small home.

“The two, very dedicated young men had the fire pretty much under control when I got there at 03:30 to take some pics.
“When I passed by the house again around 05:30, Terence Porter and Mark de Beer were still busy hosing the place down, putting out the blaze.

“Without these amazing individuals and strong winds not playing along, things could have turned out very differently for many of us living so close by. Thank you to all involved for keeping us safe.”

The cause of the fire is still unknown. Caripis said the house was being rented by people on holiday, and as far as they could tell, no one had been injured in the blaze.
This is a developing story.
