Resurfacing still under way and a hindrance
Even though Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) warned residents that the refurbishment of Voortrekker Street will take up to five months, residents are still inconvenienced by these repairs.
“I just can’t take it any longer. There is dust everywhere. The heavy vehicles are now damaging the residential areas between Spar-O-Rama and The Heads. The heavy vehicles drive over our grass and even damage our property,” said a resident, Ferdi Prinsloo. Prinsloo said after this project is finished there will be nothing left of the streets to the north and south of Voortrekker. TCLM commenced with the reconstruction project of Voortrekker Street on Tuesday September 7. The top layer of the current tar surface is being removed and replaced with a new one. “This project is long overdue and will restore the structure of the road as well as extend its life,” said Themba Sibiya, TCLM’s communication manager.

The municipality applied to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs in 2020 for the grant to upgrade the street. It was approved at the end of June. For the remainder of the construc[1]tion, motorists can turn either left or right at the Voortrekker and Barac Streets (Spar-O-Rama corner) four[1]way stop as they drive towards Long Tom Pass and The Heads from the central business district.
“The plan will be subjected to review based on real-time traffic during construction. We would like to appeal to motorists and members of the public to be patient and exercise caution during the construction period,” said Sibiya. The project is expected to be completed towards the end of January 2022.
