Ear surgery gives friendly three-year-old local a new voice

Pediatric Care Africa assisted the boy to receive surgery on his ears.

A friendly three-year-old boy has not stopped talking since getting grommets with the help of Pediatric Care Africa (PCA).

He underwent a successful myringotomy on October 21 at Busamed Day Hospital after having had difficulty with his ears for a long time, causing him to be hard of hearing.

Since then he has been doing very well and has started talking. Indeed, according to his mother, he has not stopped since the surgery! Prior to the procedure, he had not talked much as he could not hear himself very well.

“Thank you very much to Dr Gustav Smook, a renowned ENT surgeon in Mbombela, Dr Sias Willemse, a well-known anaesthesiologist and Busamed Hospital. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to André Oosthuizen, the general manager of Busamed, for your dedication and assistance with this little boy’s surgery; without you he would not have received this very necessary myringotomy,” said Surika van der Merwe, the PCA’s secretary.
