Bystander survives being hit by bullet during armed robbery

The incident occurred at a cash-based office used to pay farmworkers, at around 11:00 on Friday, October 29.

A women escaped death when a bullet grazed her head during an armed robbery last Friday.

The incident occurred at a cash-based office used to pay farmworkers, at around 11:00.  Hi-Tech Onderberg and the police are still searching for the five men involved.

According to Hi-Tech Onderberg Region’s Marc Haarhoff, a silver, late-model Mercedes AMG with a sunroof and the number plate KDV 725 MP stopped outside the office just before 11:00.

Three men exited the car. Two of them entered the office and the third stood to the side of the car outside the building.

In a matter of minutes, the two men exited the office with bags and the third man then walked back to the car, opened the back door for the men and then climbed into the back with them before the car sped off.

Haarhoff said the robbers fired shots in the office. One of the bullets grazed the head of a woman inside the building.

According to Frits Koekemoer of Nkomazi Emergency Services, the woman is extremely lucky to be alive and is in a stable condition.  She was rushed to Shongwe Hospital by LowMed.

Haarhoff added that they are offering a R10 000 reward for any information that will lead to the perpetrators’ location, or lead to their arrest. Contact Haarhoff on 076 722 3883. A provincial police spokesperson, Brig Selvy Mohlala, confirmed the incident and said a case of robbery and a case of attempted murder had been opened by the police in Malalane.

“No one has been arrested as yet and the SAPS urges anyone with information on the whereabouts of the suspects to contact Det Sgt Zenzile Nkomo on 082 448 9355, or call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111.

“Alternatively members of the public can send information via the My SAPS app. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous,” said Mohlala.
