Over a dozen armed men ransack Tonga store

Hi-Tech Onderberg region is offering a R10 000 reward for anyone who can give information that will lead to the positive identification and arrests of the suspects.

Around 20 men, some of them armed them with rifles, 9mm firearms and an AK-47, broke into the Patel Hardware in Naas on Monday November 15 at approximately 06:00.

The Tonga police spokesperson, Capt Magonseni Nkosi, confirmed the incident. He said the suspects fired about 30 rounds of ammunition into the store and also fired at the vehicles of passers-by. He said one of the vehicles was hit, however, the driver managed to flee uninjured and went to the police station to open a case of attempted murder.

The store had been closed at the time of the incident. No one was injured.

No arrests have yet been made at this stage.

A source with knowledge about the case, but who wanted to remain anonymous, said the suspects ransacked the store, and while they made their escape with some cash, half of the money had been burned in their attempts to blow open the safe.
