Cross clean-up by community a success
The Lowveld community came together over the weekend to clean up and paint the cross' stand at the lookout point in Steiltes.
With masses of graffiti donning the walls of the reservoir on which the cross stands, the area has recently become somewhat of an eyesore.
The clean-up started at 08:00 on Saturday December 4. More people trickled in and joined the paint team throughout the day.

Organised by Nanette van der Westhuizen, she said her husband’s business, Instrulec Electrical Contractors, sponsored the paint and tools such as rollers, brushes and cameras to keep watch on the area.
“Herotel Mbombela sponsored the monthly rent for a public IP as well as the router and dish for the Wi-Fi for the area. “And the installation was free,” she said.

“Nelspruit Forum sponsored the 24/7 surveillance and installed the cameras for us for free, while Voltex Nelspruit sponsored new light globes for the cross.”
She said other sponsors included Talisman White River for the brushcutter and petrol, as well as Rossgro who sponsored a leaf blower and more petrol.
“Johan Bronkhorst of Cowley Paints sponsored in his own capacity some extenders, and Cowley’s gave us paint
at cost.”

Van der Westhuizen also thanked Ken Robertson of the FF Plus for the cleaning the wall before it was painted.

“He also had his own team of people come out to help with the labour and the turnout was great. All the young adults who pitched without anybody asking for them to help, we thank them, as their hands made the tough work a lot lighter.

“I also want to thank the City of Mbombela and Silulumanzi. These entities really went out of their way to give me the permit.
“Thanks to Pr Tobie and the churches, as without their assistance, this project would not have been a success. Seeing the state of the reservoir made me want to repaint over the graffiti, some of which was very offensive. It was a project that needed to be done; everybody came together and all of us did the best we could. We hope it will stay nice and clean,” she said.
