Changing lives, one wheelchair donation at a time

The Meyer Beukes Warriors on Wheels Foundation recently had an adventurous day. Kylah Beukes walked Lowvelder through their day of delivering wheelchairs.

It happened to be Meyer’s very first outreach, too.

Kylah Beukes walked Lowvelder through their day of delivering wheelchairs.

“Our first stop was at Ally Mathebula, and what a warm and loving reception we received! His wheelchair had long since passed its expiry date and they were so grateful for the new one.

“Right after our first delivery, we decided a mud bath for the bakkie was in order. I was on the verge of tears and Meyer was adamant we were about to die! Needless to say, all ended well thanks to the awesome community who climbed in to get us out, and we were back on track for our deliveries.

“Our second delivery was a more challenging one. Mpho Dibakwane was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and has severe contractures. We tried our best to seat him as comfortably as possible and we managed to get a smile. His parents were extremely grateful. Mpho was seated in a dilapidated old wheelchair, he being tied down by cloth to prevent him from falling out. We were so grateful we could leave knowing Mpho would be more comfortable.

An added mud adventure was part of the day.

“Our third delivery was such a happy one! Simomo Thabethe was so excited and chuffed to receive a wheelchair. He is not entirely verbal, but he expressed much happiness and laughter.

“Our fourth delivery was at the home of Bridgette and her fragile gogo, Ellen Mokoena. The sun was scorching by then and Bridgette explained to me that Gogo had to crawl on her knees to get outside to be under the trees.

“Gogo Ellen was not able to speak, but we trust she will be much more comfortable and seated safely in her wheelchair.

“Our fifth and final delivery was so special. Alwande Mkhonto just loves having visitors and is such a friendly little guy. He came through the door all smiles to receive his very first wheelchair.

“His kind and friendly mum, Priscar, was so excited to take her son along to church on Sunday. She cannot wait to start taking him for walks and spending quality time outside.

“This entire day was made possible by the amazing donation received from the Lowveld Nomads. We are eternally grateful that our foundation was chosen as a beneficiary and that we were able to return to these families with the assistance they needed.

“To my sidekick, Sandra Ndlovu, thank you for taking your time to reach out into your community and for helping us identify warriors in need.

“Last but not least, to my precious warrior and inspiration, Meyer. I was so humbled to have you by my side today. I had flashbacks of the first moments of your devastating diagnosis to where we are today, and I just stand in absolute awe of the great, perfect and mysterious ways of God. I am thankful you got to see just some of the many lives today that have been touched through yours. I love you, my brave warrior.”
