SDM announce its new political leadership
All the officer bearers were elected uncontested.
SEKHUKHUNE – The Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) council elected Keamotseng Stanley Ramaila as
the executive mayor for a second term on Thursday.
Julia Mathebe is the new speaker of council, while David Kgwediyebotse Chego is the chief whip. The former
Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) mayor, Johannes Phokane, was elected as the chairperson of the
Municipal Public Accounts Committee (Mpac).
All the officer bearers were elected uncontested. They were congratulated by all political parties represented on the council: the ANC, EFF, DA, Bolshevick Party, the Socialist Agenda of Dispossessed Africans and the South African Maintenance and Estate Beneficiaries Association.
Mathebe, who henceforth will preside over council meetings, promised to make it easier for councillors to perform their duties.
In his acceptance speech, Ramaila acknowledged that the people of Sekhukhune are tired of excuses and all they
want is to receive the services they deserve. “Batho ba ga bo rena ba nyaka meetse. (Our people need water). Even though they are aware of the historical neglect by successive colonial and apartheid governments, which built no water infrastructure for them, they don’t want excuses,” said Ramaila.
“Our people simply want to see us working toward providing them with this all-important
service,” he added.
Ramaila announced a mayoral committee team that will assist in the execution of the SDM’s executive
mandate.
A notable change is that the infrastructure and water services portfolio, led by Cllr Kukie Sefala, now has two deputies who will assist her in fast-tracking the provision of water services to the communities.
Of the 10 members of the mayoral committee, including of the mayor, four are males and six are females.
