Twitchers enjoy exploring variety of birds on outing to Kaapsehoop

A group of Lydenburg bird lovers joined the Escarpment Bird Club (EBC) during their outing recently.

Members of the Escarpment Bird Club (EBC) visited Kaapsehoop to explore the variety of birds offered in the area – forest birds, grassland birds, warblers, cisticolas, buzzards, swallows, and the magpie mannikin, listed as an uncommon and highly localised resident, near threatened.

“Do you see the light? Follow it to the left …” says guide Johan Gouws, spotting a Little Brown Job on the roadside.

Under the expert guidance of Johan Gouws and his equally enthusiastic twitcher wife Allison, EBC’s birders managed to record no fewer than 103 species during the weekend.

“Do you see the light? Follow it to the left …” says guide Johan Gouws, spotting a Little Brown Job on the road side.

Birdiig with an experienced guide and resident of Kaapsehoop had its perks. Gouws took club members to many secret spots known for specific species. Froggy Pond in the forest produced a few lifers for some (a species ticked off for the first time on a birder’s list).

The next outing of the Escarpment Bird Club is planned for March 26 in Verlorenkloof. For more information, contact George Skinner on 082 600 5962.
