Weather service warns of severe thunderstorms in Lowveld areas

A level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms has been issued for Wednesday October 26.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms with heavy downpours over the eastern parts of Mpumalanga.

This follows after Mbombela and surrounds had received heavy rainfall on the evening of October 24.

According to SAWS, “Models currently indicate the heaviest rainfall may occur along the escarpment and Lowveld areas of Mpumalanga tomorrow (October 26). Rainfall of 40-60mm is possible in places in the morning, which may fall in a short timeframe. This may result in flooding of roads, bridges and formal/informal settlements.”

The service said it might further disrupt travel due to poor driving visibility or road obstructions. It also holds possible danger to life due to fast-flowing water and streams.
