Penryn hosts unforgettable concert for music lovers in Mbombela

The crowd was graced with some sweet melodies from piano and harps.

Penryn College hosted a concert on March 11, Triple Play, which included local talent and musicians from other provinces.
It was an eclectic mix of music with a repertoire varying from light film melodies to pure classical compositions, as well as works by contemporary composers.

Theresa Prinsloo, a renowned harp player, and her talented students, Alayna Kuzel and Karla Brits, started off the evening at Penryn College’s Chapel with a concert waltz performed on three harps, setting the stage for music of an extremely high calibre for the rest of the programme. Apart from the harp arrangements, a combination of harp and piano during the first half provided music lovers with another unique musical experience.

The Nocoré Ensemble Choir performed two modern choral arrangements and delivered a spine-chilling performance of ‘Serenity’ by Gjeilo, accompanied by visiting cellist Gerrit Koorsen. He and Eugene Joubert on the piano gave a rendition of Rachmaninoff’s First Movement, the Cello Sonata, Opus 29, providing an example of what is to be expected during the Wakkerstroom programme later this week.

The second half wowed the audience from the very first note from the harp trio to the last notes sung by the Nocoré Ensemble. They are a group of 15 skilled Lowveld singers, who over the past few years have become well known for their repertoire of the most challenging choral arrangements performed by professional choirs across the world. One of the many highlights was the ‘Baroque Flamenco’ by Henson-Conand, an unforgettable rendition with superb artistry by the three harpists, eliciting sounds very few members of the audience had heard executed on a harp before!

If you missed the concert, an extended programme during the coming weekend’s Wakkerstroom Music Festival, from March 17 to 21, will provide another opportunity to see maestros such as Joubert and Koorsen in action. All local musicians will also perform again.
