Penryn muso dazzles during gig at Kaapsehoop

Tessi Nandi entertained the crowd with songs she had composed herself. She was supported by her family, teachers and the Penreach and Penryn families.

Music lovers came together to enjoy a great performance by Penryn pupil, Tessi Ratnarajah, at Bohemian Groove Café on Sunday April 16.

It was a fun event which was well attended by many Penryn and Penreach families. Tessi Ratnarajah, known as Tessi Nandi on stage, is in Grade 12 at Penryn and one of 24 Penreach Shalamuka Bursary holders.

The talented girl said this was her first time hosting her own gig and she performed songs she composed herself.
This included haunting melodies such as “Temporary home”, “The same moon” and “Rules of the game”.

Tessi had formerly opened stages for well-known artists such as Arno Carstens and Majozi, but she said that nothing quite beats the excitement of a home crowd. “It was good to have friends, family, schoolmates and teachers among the people who came to watch me perform. Music is my life and I intend to make it my profession.”

According to her, one of her dreams is to share a stage or do a duet with international artist, Frank Ocean, one day.
“This performance is the beginning of new things and I am hoping to have more gigs. I already released some of the songs on digital music streaming sites,” she explained.

According to Johanri de Jager, the communication manager at Penreach, the bursary programme was specifically designed to promote a culture of academic excellence in South Africa by providing comprehensive educational and psychosocial support to highly gifted and financially deserving learners.
