Motorists urged to travel with caution on R40 following sudden appearance of sinkhole
The sinkhole appeared suddenly in the middle lane of the R40 near Drum Rock hill, from Mbombela towards White River, on Tuesday night. It has not yet been repaired and motorists are urged to travel with extreme caution.

Several motorists sustained damage to their vehicles when their cars drove through a large sinkhole in the middle lane of the R40, on the hill near Drum Rock, from Mbombela towards White River on Monday evening, April 25.
The sinkhole is on the stretch of road between Riverside and Kiaat Private Hospital.

The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport’s spokesperson, Bongani Dlamini, said a contractor had been conducting resealing work on that stretch of road earlier on Tuesday, and that the sinkhole had developed in the evening, once the contractor had left the site.
He said the sinkhole had not yet been repaired and that the scope of the damage was still being assessed at this stage.
He said road warning sings had been placed leading up to and around the sinkhole, but he urged motorists to travel with extreme caution, especially at night.
