Congestion and delays at Lebombo Border continue

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, said the traffic delays along the N4 heading towards the Lebombo Border and other roads around Komatipoort are expected to be cleared by Monday June 26.

Mmusi said traffic officials are on the road, but that the traffic delays are expected to persist throughout the weekend.

He had previously told Lowvelder that the border post systems had been continuously going off- and online for the past three weeks.

He said some traffic officials are on-site.

He also urged motorists and truck drivers to be patient, cautious and to obey the rules of the road.

He added that a task team has been formed to set up temporary measures to address the Lebombo Border congestion.

Some of the truck drivers stuck in the backlog say they have been in the queue since the early hours of Saturday morning, June 24, and anticipate to cross over either by tomorrow or Monday morning.

“This has become the norm for us now, but it’s something we can never get used to. We are told the system is down, and some of the drivers have taken over both lanes, so no one is moving. We have made peace with the fact that we might be here until Monday morning,” said one truck driver who did not wish to be named.

People travelling to Komatipoort are urged to use the Tenbosch road, while those crossing over to Mozambique are bound to face the traffic jam.

“I can see some of the people turning back to use alternative roads into the town. Unfortunately, I’m making my way to Mozambique and I have to endure this standstill,” said one holidaymaker who plans to cross over to Mozambique.
