Serious vehicle collision leaves two in critical condition

Two people were left in a critical condition and others were injured following a head-on vehicle collision on the N4 between Mara and Karino.

A head-on collision between a VW Polo and minibus on the N4 between Mara and Karino on Tuesday July 11 left two people in a critical condition and several others injured.

Emer-G-Med’s Martin Jeffrey said the call came through at about 11:30. The minibus was reportedly travelling towards Komatipoort, while the Polo was heading towards Mbombela. It is alleged that the Polo’s driver had lost control and collided with the minibus.

The passenger in the Polo was ejected from the vehicle, and one of the passengers of the minibus was entrapped in the wreck.

Jeffrey said the Jaws of Life had to be used to free her from the vehicle. He said the other patients sustained minor to moderate injuries.

It is unclear how many people were in each of the vehicles when the accident occurred. The patients were transported by Emer-G-Med and ER24.

The crash had caused the road to be closed off. TRAC tweeted at midday that it was being cleared. The road was opened again by 14:05.
