Mozambican citizen dies from being hit by car in White River

The man was trying to cross the R537 on a bicycle when he was hit by a car. He was declared dead on the scene.

A man was killed while riding his bicycle near White River Crossing on Thursday July 27, at about 17:00. He was hit by a car.

According to Emer-G-Med’s Martin Jeffrey, the vehicle’s driver said everything happened so fast, that he could only recall that he was driving on the R537 Sabie turn-off when the cyclist tried to cross the road. The driver said he could not stop in time and hit him.

“When I arrived at the scene, I found the man with multiple fractures in his body. I declared him dead on the scene. The matter was handed over to the White River police and the body was removed by the government pathologist,” Jeffrey said.

The spokesperson for the White River Police Station, Funeka Mathebula, said they are investigating a culpable homicide case. She also said the deceased had been identified by his closest next of kin, but she could not reveal his identity, as his family in Mozambique still needs to be notified.
